Delaware hospitals adopt wristband color standard

Delaware hospitals adopt wristband color standard
September 18, 2009

Delaware hospitals have adopted a voluntary standard for the color-coded wristbands used to convey critical patient information to health care workers. Red wristbands will be used for patient allergies, yellow for fall risk and purple for patients’ do-not-resuscitate preferences. “The potential for human error will be reduced now that all acute-care general hospitals have agreed to use the same colors,” said Delaware Healthcare Association President and CEO Wayne Smith. “This is one step our hospitals have taken among many toward improving patient care, especially during patient transfers between hospitals.” The AHA has asked all hospitals to consider using these wristband color standards to improve patient safety.
