The Health Resources and Services Administration today awarded $33 million in  American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants to help train health professionals. The grants include $19.3 million in scholarships for disadvantaged students; $4.9 million for programs to support underrepresented minority students and faculty; $3 million for public health traineeships; $2.6 million for nursing workforce diversity projects; $2.5 million to expand health career opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds; and $810,925 for public health dental residency programs. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the grants "will help ensure we grow our health care workforce and give our aspiring doctors, nurses and health professionals the tools and training they need to provide top-quality care to more Americans." The ARRA allotted $500 million to HRSA to address health care workforce shortages.
