The number of patients leaving the hospital against the advice of medical staff increased 39% between 1997 and 2007, to 368,000, according to a new report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The top five diagnoses for these patients in 2007 were non-specific chest pain (7%), alcohol-related disorders (6.9%), substance-related disorders (5.7%), mood disorders (3.8%), and diabetes with complications (3.4%). About one in five patients who left against medical advice were uninsured. Men were more likely to leave than women, and patients in the Northeast were more likely to leave than patients in other regions of the country.
