The National Governors Association today called for state action to speed the adoption of health information technology and health information exchange, citing “their strong potential to drive health system improvements.” Led by Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen and Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, the association’s State Alliance for e-Health encouraged states to support electronic prescribing and other e-health initiatives, protect the privacy and security of patient health information, and develop their health IT workforce. Comprised of governors and other state officials, the group said states also should promote interoperable technology and standards, streamline licensure processes and engage consumers in using health IT to manage their health and health care.
