CDC: Medicaid coverage for tobacco dependence must increase
February 07, 2008

Full Medicaid coverage for recommended tobacco-dependence treatments is critical to reducing tobacco use by the one-third of beneficiaries who smoke, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report today. In 2006, only Oregon covered all treatments recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services’ clinical practice guideline for tobacco dependence, while eight states provided no coverage, CDC said. In a report in May, the Institute of Medicine recommended all health plans, including Medicaid, cover reimbursement for effective smoking-cessation programs as a lifetime benefit.
