The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week awarded four projects grants to study the impact of different public health strategies on preventing, diagnosing and monitoring health conditions in community settings. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants will go to prevention research centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ($3.1 million), University of Pittsburgh ($1.5 million), New York University School of Medicine ($3.2 million), and Oregon Health & Science University ($2.0 million). The projects will focus on reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease; preventing falls among older adults; reducing blood pressure and colorectal cancer among African-American men; and detecting diabetic retinopathy among American Indians and Alaska Natives.
