In their effort to derail creation of a public health plan as part of health reform legislation, several Blue Cross Blue Shield Association members are surveying hospitals about the payments they receive from different payers. The South Carolina Hospital Association told AHA News Now that five of its hospital members have received the surveys in the past two weeks. The Michigan Health & Hospital Association also reports that members have received the surveys. A BCBSA spokesperson told AHA News Now that BCBSA is not directly involved in the surveys but supports efforts by its members to block a public health plan option. AHA Executive Vice President Rick Pollack said, "While we have serious concerns about the creation of a public program, there are many forms it could take. Opposing a public plan is clearly the top priority of the insurance community. The Blue Cross Blue Shield effort to collect data directly from hospitals and from providers at the state level as part of their campaign is independent of the AHA and we are not partners in this effort."
