The Department of Health and Human Services should develop and implement a plan to conduct recurring periodic surveys of randomly selected ambulatory surgery centers to obtain standardized, nationally representative information on ASC practices to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office. The GAO identified five sources of data on HAIs in ASCs − two operated by HHS, two by professional organizations and one by a state government − all of which differ in the type of information they collect. In the report, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services concurred with the GAO's recommendation.
