CA attorney general probing 7 health insurers
February 26, 2010

California Attorney General Edmund Brown Jr. yesterday subpoenaed financial records and other documents from the state's seven largest health insurers, expressing concern that some of them are "unjustly raising premiums and denying payment of legitimate claims." The companies are Aetna Health, Anthem Blue Cross, CIGNA, Health Net, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser Permanente and PacifiCare. Anthem Blue Cross recently announced plans to hike premium rates for individual members by as much as 39%. Brown said his investigation will probe whether the other health plans are planning similar rate hikes, and consider whether Anthem's increases for individual consumers are fair under California law.
