CMS reminds LTCHs to register for quality reporting program    12/21/2012
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services today reminded long-term care hospitals to register for the mandated quality reporting program. Dec. 31 is the deadline for LTCHs to register with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Health Safety Network through which two of the required measures are reported. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandated reporting of quality measures for LTCHs to begin no later than fiscal year 2014, and failure to report quality measures will result in a 2% reduction to an LTCH's annual marketbasket update. CMS also updated its LTCH Quality Reporting Program Manual and a frequently asked question document from its Oct. 18 special open door forum. More information about the LTCH Quality Reporting Program is available at
CDC: New U.S. HIV infections remained stable    12/21/2012
The number of new HIV infections in the U.S. remained stable in 2010, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, HIV incidence "remains a serious health problem," according to the agency. The rate of new infections has remained stable at about 50,000 annually since the mid-1990s with an estimated 47,500 people acquiring the virus in 2010. African Americans, Latinos and gay and bisexual men remain disproportionately affected by the virus. However, new infections among African American women were down 21% between 2008 and 2010. New infections among gay and bisexual men increased 22% over the same time period.
Reminder: Physician EHR reporting attestation deadlines approaching    12/21/2012
Dec. 31 is the last day physicians and other eligible professionals can complete their 90- or 365-day reporting period to attest to meaningful use of electronic health records in calendar year 2012 under the Medicare EHR incentive program. To benefit fully from Medicare EHR incentives, EPs must meet federal requirements for meaningful use in CY 2012 and attest to meaningful use by Feb. 28, 2013. Those wishing to attest should consider visiting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' attestation website well in advance of the deadline to ensure they are familiar with the complex process. EPs participating in the Medicaid EHR program should check the attestation deadline for their state. For more information, visit
