CMS announces Medicare ACO savings, new bundled payment participants   01/30/2014
Medicare accountable care organizations generated more than $380 million in savings in the first year of the Shared Savings and Pioneer ACO programs, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced today. Hospitals, physicians and other Medicare providers participate in the ACOs, which share with Medicare savings from lowering the growth in health care costs while coordinating care for patients and meeting certain quality and performance standards. Also today, CMS announced that 232 additional acute-care hospitals, skilled nursing homes, physician group practices, long-term care hospitals and home health agencies have entered agreements to participate in the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative. The Medicare demonstration includes four models of care that bundle payments for multiple services received during an episode of inpatient and/or post-acute care.
AHA report describes hospital paths to health care transformation   01/30/2014
A new report from the AHA Committee on Research outlines strategies to help hospitals and care systems navigate the evolving health care environment. The report reviews the environmental pressures driving hospitals and care systems toward greater clinical integration, more financial risk and increased accountability, and provides a framework for leading organizations toward a customized path or series of paths for health care transformation. The report also highlights successful integrated care delivery programs and various forms of integration that can accelerate organizational transformation. The Committee on Research serves as the board of trustees for the AHA's Health Research & Educational Trust affiliate.
AHA long-term care/rehab section names 2014 leaders   01/30/2014
Catherine Barr, president of Bethesda Hospital and senior vice president of community services for HealthEast Care System in St. Paul, MN, is 2014 chair of the AHA's Section for Long-Term Care and Rehabilitation. As chair, Barr will lead the section’s governing council on public policy issues of concern to post-acute and continuing care providers and on AHA member service strategies. Maureen Banks, chief operating officer for Spaulding Rehab Hospital Boston and Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, is 2014 chair-elect and will chair the section in 2015.
