The Food and Drug Administration has agreed to allow Baxter Healthcare Corp. to temporarily import normal saline solution from its Spain manufacturing facility to help address the critical U.S. shortage, the agency announced last week. Health care professionals should contact Baxter directly to obtain the product. FDA earlier approved the temporary import of normal saline made by Fresenius Kabi USA in Norway. In addition, the agency said Baxter and two other U.S. makers of normal saline are currently releasing product. While these shipments will help reduce current disruptions, they are not expected to resolve the ongoing shortage. “Preventing drug shortages is a top priority for the FDA, and we are doing everything within our authority to improve access and alleviate this shortage,” the agency said.
