AHA, hospitals push for a delay in DSH funding cuts

Millions of Americans who were previously uninsured are expected to obtain coverage as a result of the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.” But hospitals that treat large numbers of Medicare and Medicaid patients will feel the pain of pending cuts to the disproportionate share hospital (DSH) program.

DSH payments are slated for a $500 million cut for the fiscal year beginning in October. Jose Sanchez, president and CEO of Chicago’s Norwegian American Hospital, and AHA Executive Vice President Rick Pollack explain why hospitals are urging federal policymakers to delay the cuts. Listen here.
