New edition of ICD-9 coding guidelines

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) have released updated guidelines for coding and reporting clinical diagnoses and procedures using the ICD-9-CM coding system. The AHA, American Health Information Management Association, CMS and NCHS have approved the new guidelines, which take effect Oct. 1. Adherence to the guidelines, which are updated annually, is required under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
