Without donors, little can be done for thousands of patients whose hope lies in the generosity of others whom they may never meet. More than 110,000 people are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in the United States. Thousands more need tissue or cornea transplants. Every day, more people are added to the national organ transplant waiting list and each week, more than 100 of them die because not enough organs are available for transplant.
That disturbing fact explains why we encourage hospitals across the country to get involved in this month’s national campaign to register 300,000 new organ donors by April 30. Sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration, the “Workplace Partnership for Life” campaign brings together the AHA and other national partners, hospitals and local and regional organ, eye and tissue donation organizations to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those who have saved and improved lives through the gift of donation (see the story on this page).
