Strategic Plan positions the AHA to lead and serve our members

The following is AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock's introductory message from the new 2013-2015 AHA Strategic Plan.
Whether you lead a hospital or a hospital association, strategic planning has never been more critical.
As championed in our mission statement, the American Hospital Association seeks to lead, represent and serve hospitals, health systems, and other related organizations in this rapidly changing environment. Our 2013-2015 Strategic Plan was developed to help us do just that through collaboration among AHA management, our governance committees and board of trustees. It represents our best thinking about the challenges facing the field and how the AHA can best help you prepare for the road ahead.
Building on last year's plan of advancing the health care delivery system and optimizing the association's internal operational effectiveness with an eye toward the long term, the 2013-2015 Strategic Plan seeks to align the association's work with the most critical issues facing our members, issues ranging from accelerating performance improvement to clinical leadership.
At the same time, like you, we are seeking to optimize our operational performance so that we can deliver the most value for your AHA membership. Specifically, we are taking steps to make our internal operations more efficient through performance excellence initiatives, enhancing ourgovernance processes and strengthening our relationshipswith our members. We are also investing in the development of our employees to ensure we continue to have the skills and competencies to best serve you, our members. We are honored that you have chosen us to represent you and are committed to acting as good stewards of that trust.
While the plan provides an immediate roadmap for the next three years, it also seeks to answer the question: What should the AHA look like moving forward? The strategic aims, each with a set of measures and specific action plans, represent what we'll do in the short term to move us toward achievement of the impact statement, which takes a longer view.
The 2013-2015 AHA Strategic Plan was designed to ensure that the AHA strategic framework and individual strategies effectively position the AHA to lead, represent and serve the field as its national advocate, but it can also serve as a guidepost as you map out your own strategic goals for the years ahead. We look forward to working with you to turn its ambitious goals into reality.
