AHA report identifies strategies for intergenerational workforce

January 24, 2014

A new report from the AHA Committee on Performance Improvement provides hospital leaders with strategies for managing an intergenerational workforce to help achieve the triple aim of better care, better health and lower costs. “Each generation brings a different set of values, beliefs and expectations to the workplace, from the traditionalists (born before 1945), baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964), Generation X (born 1965 to 1980) to the millennials (born after 1980),” the report notes. “Leaders need to develop strategies to engage these different groups simultaneously to achieve optimal clinical outcomes and patient experience.” The strategies found in the report are intended to help hospital leaders build an organizational culture that develops and nurtures employees of all ages and support the AHA’s Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence initiative.
